Voyaging Art: New Zealand to Maui

June 18 2008

The Festival of Canoes in Lahaina went beautifully in May.  I’m just finishing my paintings of the carvers working on their canoes.  Artists from 10 islands across the Pacific—all under the giant 135-years old Banyan Tree by the harbor—all masters of their craft.  I’ve gotten to know some, such as the Maoris from New Zealand.  They’ve even made it into my paintings a few times!

And now they are in my gallery again, this time represented by their own beautiful art.  Master carver Takirirangi Smith and his son Hingangaroa Smith are showcasing their carvings and block prints.

One of the things that I love is that these pieces are both abstract and also full of story—in many cases their own version of a myth told here in Hawaii.

There is a carved fish by Takirirangi with an abalone eye, and also a rare pukaea, or Maori War trumpet by Hingangaroa.  The prints bring these artists work into a contemporary format, while still using their carving skills.

More Journeys for Art—Next Port, Alameda

I myself will be traveling to paint next month at the Alameda Plein Air Paint Out in the Bay Area, California July 14-20th.  If you’re in the Bay, come visit!  There will be an exhibition in Jackson Park July 19th from 10am-5pm.  The Alameda Island is a delightful community of tree-lined avenues and Victorian homes.  It’s a wonderful place, I’ve found, for painting portraits of people’s homes.

Marilyn Monroe and Frank Lloyd Wright, Together on Maui

June 18 2008

Speaking of architecture, in a recent commission I painted the Kamehameha Golf Course, including the clubhouse, which was originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Marilyn Monroe.

Victorian Home Portrait in Alameda, California

October 21 2007

In September I had the honor to do a commission in Alameda, California for some wonderful collectors of mine.  Alameda is a delightful community near San Francisco full of Victorian homes, which all deserve to be painted.

Below are images of the process, as well as the painting I had previously done for Bob and Gloria here on Maui.

Regarding commissions, I would be happy to paint your home.  I won't show up with ladders and paint rollers, but I will create an expression for you of the place you and your family love and live.

Aloha, Maggie T. Sutrov
