Ka Mate, Kamate Ka mate ka mate is a chant used by Maui when he snared the sun and attacked it with a weapon which was the jawbone of his grandmother. The reason he attacked the sun was to slow it down in order that plant life might grow and people might live. During the struggle with the sun Maui chanted: Ka mate Ka mate Ka ora ka ora Which are the first lines of a sacred dance. Translated it means “Will it be death or will it be life? Will it be death or will it be life?
